Aghiorghitiko [ Ah yor yee' ti ko ]:

So called as it originates from the town of St. George, today known as Nemea. Grown primarily in the production of A.O. Nemea wines. Makes both dry and sweet wine Adds darkness and soft tannins when blended.

Taste: blackcurrants, prunes, leather, cinnamon and other spices on a very aromatic nose, and spicy, round, soft fruit flavours on a fulsome, complex, warm and well-balanced palate (referenced from).


Xinomavro [ Ksee no' ma vro ]:

The predominant grape variety in Macedonia is a native red called Xinomavro, (meaning "acid-black"). Xinomavro will age for between 5 and 15 years in the bottle. The grape has a rich tannic character. Complex aromas combine such red fruits as gooseberry with hints of olives, spices and dried tomatoes.


Mandelaria [ Mahn dee lar ya' ]:

The Mandelaria grape, rich in colour.

Also known as Amorgiano.

Prominent in the Agean area including Crete, Rhodes, the Dodecanese islands, the Cyclades and eastern Sporadese.

Mandelaria participates in various Appellations of Origin usually with other grapes such as Monemvassia in Paros, Kotsifali in Crete or as a single variety on the island of Rhodes

On Santorini, Paris Sigalas blends Mandilaria with the riper Mavrotragano to produce a rich and smoky wine competitive with New World Zinfandel and Syrah for its boldness and concentration.


Krassato:

Produces dry red wines. Grown in Northern Thessaly and western Macedonia. Usually blended with Xinomavro and Stavroto grapes producing A.O. Rapsani wines.


Stavroto:

Grown in Rapsani. Blended Xinomavro to produce A.O. Rapsani wines.


Mavrodaphne [ Mav ro tha'f nee ]:

Mavrodaphne, meaning black laurel, is mainly found in the Peloponnesean regions of Achaia and Ilia as well as the Ionian Islands.Used to produce the world renowned sweet red wines of Patras.Low yielding vines, producing expensive but quality wines.


Savatiano [ Sa va tya no' ]:

Savatiano is the predominant grape in the region of Attica. Displays excellent resistance to the dry summer weather. Produces elegant, well balanced white wines with an aroma of citrus fruits and flowers. Also used in the production of retsina. The dry A.O. varietal wines of Attica can be fresh tasting with a delicate floral nose and a palate of grace, delicacy and distinction.


Assyrtiko [ A seer' tee ko ]:

Produces dry and sweet white wine. Grown mainly on Santorini, Paros, Amorghos and Naxos. In the last 25 years Assyrtiko has been planted throughout Greece including Macedonia and Attica where it expresses a milder and fruitier character. Assyrtiko can also be used together with the aromatic Aidani and Athiri grapes for the production of the unique, naturally sweet wines called VINSANTO (wine from Santorini), well known since Byzantine times.
